Gislason, meanwhile, is more preoccupied with processing the complicated feelings aroused in a long-time expatriate by the land of his birth, a place that to him is familiar even though it does not feel exactly like home.
As a child growing up in England, Gislason did not know his Icelandic father, who had had a secret love affair with his English mother.
Gislason's quest as a young man to discover the identity of his father and contact his Icelandic relatives is described in his memoir The Promise of Iceland.
A thirteenth century saga manuscript, written on calfskin vellum Wikimedia commons. The paint was scalded by ashes from the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in Our plan was to travel right across that impossibly beautiful island to record stories from the sagas of Iceland.
Later, the girls participate in the Kashima Gatalympics while wearing promotional Franchouchou T-shirts as a publicity stunt. When the girls get covered in mud in the first round, they are forced to keep themselves dirty to avoid washing their human makeup off, which ruins their self-advertisement.
After Tae wins first prize, Sakura remembers giving her a spare shirt and tells her to remove her muddy clothes, only to discover that the clean shirt underneath is actually for Drive-In Tori.
Meanwhile, a journalist in attendance named Shinta Okoba recognizes 4's resemblance to Junko Konno after viewing the Drive-In Tori commercial and decides to investigate her.
As Franchouchou hold a photo-op session with a small group of fans, Ai and Junko clash with each other over their different opinions on how idols should interact with their fans.
Sakura hears from Junko about how hard she tried to become an idol in life, only to die in a plane crash before her first tour in Kyushu; feeling her outdated mindset on idols is hindering the other girls, Junko contemplates leaving Franchouchou.
Meanwhile, Saki learns from Ai about how her death from a lightning strike during an outdoor concert at Tosu Stadium left her with a fear of lightning and a determination not to be overshadowed by her own death.
The next day, Kotaro announces that Franchouchou will be a part of the Saga Rock Festival, where Ai and Junko are to perform a duet, causing the group to feel uneasy.
Junko refuses to practice for Franchouchou's Saga Rock performance and locks herself away, forcing Ai to cover her portion of their duet.
On the day before the show, Kotaro assures Junko that she does not need to follow the modern standards of the idol industry, convincing her to rejoin the group.
When a thunderstorm strikes during their performance, Ai breaks down on stage and struggles to sing, but Junko lends her support and Ai recovers.
In the middle of their song, the zombies are struck by lightning, which illuminates their bodies and electrically filters their voices. The audience and media are impressed by these effects, and Franchouchou are reported as Saga Rock's breakout idol group.
As Franchouchou enjoy a string of new gigs and events, a large man named Takeo Go comes to one of their events after recognizing child star Lily Hoshikawa.
Lily reveals that the man is her father and former manager, and that she is a transgender girl formerly known as Masao Go, who died from the shock of growing facial hair during her stressful television career.
Realizing how much Takeo cared for Lily, Franchouchou invite him to a special concert where Lily performs a special song to give him a proper goodbye.
Saki stops a public altercation between Franchouchou and the remnants of her former biker gang, Dorami, whose current leader, Maria Amabuki, is challenged by the rival gang Korosuke to a chicken race towards a cliff at Mt.
Maria accepts the challenge in defiance of her mother, Saki's friend and former Dorami boss Reiko Kirishima, who retired from the gang for a normal married life following Saki's death during an identical race in Learning of the challenge, Saki takes Maria's place using Reiko's motorcycle, which she destroys in an explosion after jumping over the cliff a second time.
After Saki returns unscathed, Reiko punches and scolds her for her recklessness, regaining Maria's respect.
Saki and the rest of Franchouchou celebrate Reiko and Maria's reconciliation by performing an idol concert for both gangs. Franchouchou are scheduled to hold a concert at local performance venue Arpino, which Sakura feels may be a clue to regaining her memories.
But Richard and Kari go to the places where the events of some of the sagas happened. They also have rewritten the featured sagas in simple clear language.
And they intersperse these with personnel stories and odd stories in Icelands' near and far history. It is a fitting tribute to Iceland's historical and ongoing role in world-class and world-first literature.
Dec 28, Danielle rated it it was amazing. This book is the kind in which the authors take you on a journey - not the fleeting kind in which you stand by idle watching the world rush by, but the kind that lovingly leads you by the hand and takes you on a real adventure.

So while technically I may not have ever seen Iceland, in a sense I have - not just the country itself but the innermost depths of the heritage and culture.
An absolutely wonderful tribute to Iceland, I adored this book and couldn't have enjoyed it more. Jun 17, Laura rated it really liked it Shelves: 4-star , historical , australian-author , non-fiction.
And how cool is that!? And now I really want to travel to Iceland! Feb 28, Rikki Hill rated it really liked it.
Teaching year 8 History - which has a Vikings topic - meant this felt a bit like work for me I'm fascinated by Iceland, I love a bit of travel writing which this kind of is at times, and although I'm interested in the sagas I think this was a better way for me to read them than to just look at them in their own.
This is a great read for its mix of subject- it is not just a collection of Norse mythology or deep history.
It is the personal story of a co author establishing their right to be acknowledged as part of the unbroken lineage of Icelanders.
It is the mythology and the history and the current culture. It captures the story of chess player Bobby. It is not a dry read, the language just flows, a year story.
There is even a chapter near the end that explains why we still have these sagas This is a great read for its mix of subject- it is not just a collection of Norse mythology or deep history.
There is even a chapter near the end that explains why we still have these sagas preserved at all and it might surprise you.
Imagine books- or more likely animal skins - stored in barns and used to strain Or cut for shoe soles, and a man spends 13 years to collect the fragments and there you have the great story of it coming together.
But no, then you have a fire in Copenhagen where they were stored. And we have what was rescued in a cart. It was a powerful point for me - how long something when hidden is safe but where it is exhumed for preservation the precious object is exposed to ruin by being loved too much or the sharp end of nature.
How do we choose? I learnt this in Yaxha, Guatemala near the Belize boarder, a very different place from Iceland but it makes me wonder. How do you preserve without becoming an agent of destruction?
This is one of the most compelling books that I've read in a while. The strands - of ancient saga, of Kari and Richard travelling through present day Iceland, and of Kari's journey to unearth his ancestry - are beautifully woven together.
Must read. I loved this book. I listened to it as an audiobook and that really added to my enjoyment. The authors voices were calm and easy to listen to and it was great to hear the proper pronunciation of the Icelandic words.
The stories of the Sagas, intertwined with the authors' journey and the true story of Kari's family discovery kept me engaged and wanting to visit Iceland more than ever.
May 26, Anna Baillie-Karas rated it really liked it. I enjoyed this mix of stories - the sagas and an account of Richard Fidler and Kari Gislasons trip to Iceland.
I was only vaguely familiar with the sagas and hadnt realised their importance. A bit too long, but a fun immersive read.
I am so glad I have read Saga Land. When I had originally been introduced to this book at a publishers roadshow event, I knew this would be a great seller.
It had a previous release behind it in Ghost Empire by Fidler and his son, it has the ABC Radio publicity channels promoting it and it is getting great advertising in general by the publishers.
It is also probably helped along by the fact that shows like the History Channel's Vikings are very in vogue at the moment.
The Grey haired crowd would love it.This book tells the tale of an Australian and an Icelandic-Australian who journey to the country - to record the sagas for an Australian radio audience and Sky Erfahrungsberichte down some familial history.
